Talforskning, or speech research, is the scientific study of spoken language. It encompasses how speech is produced, perceived, comprehended, and used in communication. As a part of linguistics and cognitive science, talforskning draws on insights from psychology, acoustics, neuroscience, computer science, and anthropology to understand the mechanisms and functions of spoken language.

The field covers several subfields. Phonetics studies the physical sounds of speech and their articulation, transmission, and perception. Phonology examines how sounds are organized in a given language. Prosody investigates intonation, rhythm, and stress patterns. Speech perception and production look at how listeners recognize speech and how speakers coordinate articulation. Sociolinguistics considers how language variation and social context affect speech. Child language acquisition, second language learning, and psycholinguistics explore how language is learned and processed. In recent decades, talforskning has expanded into speech technology, including speech recognition, speech synthesis, and voice interface design.

Methods commonly used in talforskning include experimental perception and production tasks, acoustic analysis (e.g., spectrograms, formants, pitch), phonetic transcription with the International Phonetic Alphabet, and corpus-based or computational modeling. Neuroimaging and electrophysiology (e.g., fMRI, EEG, MEG) are employed to study the neural underpinnings of speech processing. Ethical considerations, replication, and cross-linguistic comparisons are important for robust findings.

Applications of talforskning include clinical assessment and therapy for speech and language disorders, language education, forensic linguistics, and the development of speech-based technologies such as voice assistants and accessibility tools. The field continues to evolve with advances in data collection, modeling, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
