Tahrir is an Arabic term (taḥrīr) meaning liberation, freeing, or release. Derived from the root idea of freeing or making something independent, it is used in religious, political, and cultural contexts to express the concept of emancipation and autonomy. In modern usage, it often appears in names and phrases associated with freedom movements or institutions that emphasize liberation.

One well-known use is Tahrir Square, a major public square in central Cairo, Egypt. The square has long been a focal point for public demonstrations and political gatherings. It gained international prominence during the 2011 Egyptian revolution, when mass protests in the square contributed to the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak. In Syria, Tahrir al-Sham is the name of a militant group formed in 2017 as a rebranding of a previous alliance. As with other uses of Tahrir, the name signals a claim of emancipation or liberation in political discourse.
