Tagatisvara is a relatively obscure Sanskrit term found in certain Buddhist texts, functioning as an epithet for an awakened teacher. It is not as widely attested as the better-known title Tathāgata, and scholarship treats its exact sense and scope with caution.

Etymology and interpretation of the compound are not entirely settled. The most common reading ties tagatisvara to the elements tathā (thus, in that way) and gata (gone or gone forth), with īśvara (lord) appended, yielding a sense akin to “the lord who has gone thus” or “the lord who has thus gone beyond.” This association brings Tagatisvara conceptually close to Tathāgata, the standard title of the Buddha, but the addition of īśvara suggests a slightly different stylistic or doctrinal nuance in some passages. Some scholars treat Tagatisvara as a synonym of Tathāgata in certain texts, while others view it as a distinct epithet with context-dependent meaning.

Attestations and usage are limited. Tagatisvara appears in only a small corpus of Sanskrit Buddhist writings, and there is no single, authoritative definition shared across all sources. Because of its scarcity, interpretations often depend on the surrounding doctrinal framework and the manuscript tradition in which the term appears. This rarity reflects broader variability in how enlightened beings were named and described in early Indian Buddhist literature.
