A tablao is a venue dedicated to live flamenco performances. The word comes from tablao, meaning a raised platform or stage, and the term has become associated with intimate venues in Spain that showcase flamenco. Tablaos bring together cante (singing), toque (guitar), and baile (dance). Performances are usually short to medium in length, with artists performing in small groups; the audience is typically close to the stage, creating a direct and dynamic encounter. Palmas (hand-clapping) and jaleo (encouraging exclamations) accompany the artists.

Historically, flamenco developed in marginal venues such as cantinas and cafes cantantes during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The modern tablao appeared as purpose-built venues in the mid-20th century, emphasizing curated shows and, in many cases, dinner-and-show formats. Tablaos provided steady stages for established companies as well as rising talents, helping to professionalize and sustain flamenco performance.

Today, tablaos operate in many Spanish cities and in international locales with flamenco scenes. They function as cultural institutions that preserve traditional repertoires—such as soleares, tangos, and bulerías—while also serving as contemporary spaces that commission new works. Although tourism influences their popularity, many tablaos maintain a focus on artistic integrity and on training new dancers, singers, and guitarists.
