Taajuusmuuttovälineiset, often translated as frequency converters or variable frequency drives (VFDs), are electronic devices used to control the speed of AC electric motors. They achieve this by varying the frequency and voltage of the electrical power supplied to the motor. This allows for precise control over motor speed, which can lead to significant energy savings and improved process control in various applications.

The fundamental principle behind a VFD is to convert the incoming fixed-frequency AC power into DC power, and then invert this DC power back into AC power with a variable frequency and voltage. This process is typically accomplished using semiconductor devices like insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) or metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs).

The ability to adjust motor speed offers numerous benefits.
