Sýktra is a genus of extinct birds belonging to the order Hesperornithiformes. These ancient birds are known primarily from fossilized remains found in marine deposits, indicating they were adapted to a marine lifestyle. The most prominent characteristic of sýktra, and hesperornithiforms in general, is their flightlessness. Their wings were greatly reduced, rendering them incapable of aerial locomotion. Instead, they possessed powerful legs and webbed feet, suggesting they were proficient swimmers and divers, likely preying on fish and other marine organisms.

The skeletal structure of sýktra reveals further adaptations for aquatic life. Their bones were dense, aiding in diving, and their pelvis was structured to allow for efficient propulsion through water. Unlike modern birds, sýktra had teeth lining their jaws. These teeth were not rooted in sockets but were set in a groove and held in place by a vascular pulp, similar to that found in some reptiles. This dentition would have been useful for grasping slippery prey.

The genus is relatively rare compared to other hesperornithiforms like Hesperornis.
