Süüteseade, often translated as ignition system, is a crucial component in internal combustion engines. Its primary function is to initiate the combustion process within the engine cylinders. This is achieved by generating a high-voltage electrical spark at the precise moment needed to ignite the compressed air-fuel mixture.

The modern süüteseade typically consists of several key parts. The battery or alternator provides the initial electrical power. This power is then stepped up to a very high voltage by the ignition coil. This high voltage is delivered to the spark plug, which is located in the cylinder head. The spark plug has a gap between its electrodes, and when the high voltage reaches it, it creates an electrical arc, or spark, across this gap. This spark ignites the fuel-air mixture, causing the explosion that drives the piston.

The timing of this spark is critical for engine performance and efficiency. Early süüteseadmed used mechanical points and a condenser, but these have largely been replaced by electronic ignition systems. Electronic systems offer greater precision, reliability, and often incorporate microprocessors for advanced control, optimizing ignition timing based on various engine operating conditions. This results in improved fuel economy, reduced emissions, and smoother engine operation.
