Sügavtrükisilinder refers to the engraved cylinder used in the gravure printing process. Gravure, also known as photogravure or intaglio, is a high-volume printing technique where the image is etched or engraved onto a metal cylinder. The image areas are recessed, creating cells that hold ink.

The manufacturing of a sügavtrükisilinder is a precise process. Typically, a steel core is plated with copper, and then the image is transferred to the copper surface. This can be done chemically through photomechanical processes or mechanically using diamond-tipped tools controlled by computer. The depth and size of the engraved cells determine the amount of ink transferred to the substrate, thus controlling the tonal values and color intensity of the printed image.

During the printing process, the sügavtrükisilinder rotates and is immersed in ink. An anilox roller or doctor blade scrapes off the excess ink from the non-image areas, leaving ink only within the recessed cells. When paper or another substrate is passed between the sügavtrükisilinder and an impression cylinder, the ink from the cells is transferred, creating the printed image. Sügavtrükisilindrid are known for their durability and ability to produce high-quality prints with smooth tonal gradations and sharp details, making them suitable for long print runs in packaging, magazines, and decorative laminates.
