Sõelplaatidel, an Estonian term roughly translating to "on sieve plates" or "sieve-plate type," refers to a specific type of industrial equipment used in chemical engineering and related fields. These devices are primarily employed for mass transfer operations, such as distillation, absorption, and stripping. The core component of a sõelplaatidel is a perforated plate, often referred to as a sieve tray.

The design of a sieve plate is characterized by a series of small holes or perforations distributed across its surface. During operation, a liquid flows downwards across the plate, while a vapor or gas rises upwards through the perforations. This counter-current flow creates intimate contact between the two phases. As the vapor bubbles through the liquid on the plate, mass transfer occurs, with components moving from one phase to the other. For example, in distillation, more volatile components in the liquid vaporize into the rising gas, and less volatile components in the gas condense into the liquid.

Sõelplaatidel are valued for their relatively simple design and cost-effectiveness, making them a common choice for many industrial processes. The efficiency of a sieve plate depends on factors such as the size and spacing of the holes, the liquid and vapor flow rates, and the physical properties of the substances being processed.
