Sår läkning is the biological process by which a living organism repairs damaged tissue. This complex process involves a series of coordinated events aimed at restoring the integrity of the skin and underlying tissues.

The healing process can be broadly divided into three overlapping phases: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. The inflammatory phase begins immediately after injury and involves the body's immune response. Blood vessels constrict to reduce bleeding, followed by dilation to allow inflammatory cells to reach the wound site. These cells clear debris and fight infection.

The proliferative phase is characterized by the formation of new tissue. Fibroblasts produce collagen, a protein that provides structural support. New blood vessels grow to supply nutrients to the healing area, and epithelial cells migrate across the wound surface to close it. This phase also involves contraction of the wound edges, further reducing its size.

The final phase, remodeling, can last for months or even years. During this time, collagen is reorganized and strengthened, leading to a more mature scar. The scar tissue gradually becomes less red and raised, eventually appearing as a flat, pale line.

Factors influencing wound healing include the type and severity of the wound, the individual's overall health, age, nutrition, and the presence of any infection. Proper wound care, such as keeping the wound clean and protected, is crucial for optimal healing. In some cases, medical intervention may be necessary to promote healing or manage complications.
