Säätötyyppi, often translated as control type or regulation type, refers to the fundamental approach or strategy employed in managing or influencing a system's behavior. This concept is widely applicable across various fields, including engineering, economics, biology, and computer science. Essentially, a säätötyyppi defines how a system's output or state is monitored and how any deviations from a desired setpoint are corrected.

There are broadly two main categories of säätötyyppi: open-loop and closed-loop. In an open-loop system, the control action is independent of the system's output. For example, a simple toaster operates on an open-loop principle; it toasts bread for a predetermined amount of time regardless of how brown the toast actually becomes. There is no feedback mechanism.

In contrast, a closed-loop system, also known as a feedback control system, utilizes the system's output to inform and adjust the control action. A thermostat controlling a heating system is a classic example of a closed-loop system. It measures the room temperature (the output) and compares it to the desired temperature (the setpoint). If the room is too cold, the thermostat activates the heater; if it's too hot, it deactivates it. This continuous feedback loop allows for more precise and adaptive control. The specific characteristics and algorithms used within these broad categories constitute different types of säätötyyppi, such as proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) control.
