Säätötekniikkana refers to the field of control engineering in Finnish. It is a multidisciplinary engineering field that deals with the design, implementation, and analysis of systems that regulate the behavior of other systems. The primary goal of control engineering is to achieve desired performance from a dynamic system, often in the presence of disturbances or uncertainties.

Control systems are ubiquitous and can be found in a vast array of applications. Examples include the cruise control in an automobile that maintains a constant speed, the thermostat in a building that regulates temperature, the automated systems in industrial manufacturing processes, and the guidance systems in aircraft and spacecraft. The fundamental concept in control engineering is feedback. A feedback control system measures the output of a system, compares it to a desired setpoint, and uses the difference (the error) to adjust the system's input in a way that reduces the error. This closed-loop operation allows systems to adapt to changing conditions and maintain stability. Open-loop control, on the other hand, operates without feedback, relying on pre-determined inputs.

Key areas within control engineering include system modeling, where mathematical representations of system dynamics are developed; controller design, which involves creating algorithms or devices to influence system behavior; and stability analysis, ensuring that a control system does not exhibit undesirable oscillations or unbounded responses. Modern control engineering often involves advanced techniques such as optimal control, adaptive control, and robust control to handle complex and challenging applications.
