Säätelaitteet, often translated as control devices or regulators, are components or systems designed to maintain a desired state or variable within a specific range. They are fundamental to automation and process control across a vast array of industries and applications. The primary function of a säätölaite is to monitor a process variable, compare it to a setpoint, and then take action to minimize any deviation between the two.

The core elements of a typical säätölaite system include a sensor, a controller, and an actuator. The sensor measures the process variable, such as temperature, pressure, flow rate, or level. This information is then sent to the controller, which is the "brain" of the system. The controller compares the measured value to the desired setpoint and calculates the necessary adjustment. Finally, the actuator receives the controller's command and physically manipulates the system to bring the process variable back to the setpoint. Examples of actuators include valves, pumps, heaters, and motors.

Säätölaitteet employ various control strategies. Simple on-off controllers provide basic regulation, while more sophisticated proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers offer precise and stable control by considering the present error, the accumulated error over time, and the rate of change of the error. These devices are essential for ensuring product quality, optimizing efficiency, and maintaining safety in industrial processes, as well as in everyday items like thermostats for home heating and cruise control systems in vehicles.
