Säteilykuvaus, also known as radiation imaging, refers to a group of medical imaging techniques that utilize ionizing radiation to visualize internal body structures. These methods are fundamental in diagnostics, allowing healthcare professionals to detect abnormalities, assess injuries, and monitor treatment effectiveness. The primary principle behind most forms of säteilykuvaus is the differential absorption of radiation by various tissues. Denser tissues, such as bone, absorb more radiation, appearing lighter on the resulting image, while less dense tissues like soft tissues absorb less radiation and appear darker.

The most common type of säteilykuvaus is radiography, often referred to as X-ray imaging. In this process, a beam of X-rays is passed through the body, and the transmitted radiation is captured on a detector, either photographic film or a digital sensor. This creates a two-dimensional projection image. Another significant technique is computed tomography (CT), which uses X-rays to create cross-sectional images, or "slices," of the body. CT scans provide more detailed anatomical information than conventional radiography and are used for a wide range of diagnostic purposes. Fluoroscopy is a type of X-ray imaging that produces real-time moving images, often used to guide procedures like catheter insertions or to visualize the movement of organs. While highly valuable, säteilykuvaus techniques carry a risk associated with exposure to ionizing radiation, and imaging protocols are designed to minimize this exposure while still obtaining diagnostic-quality images.
