Sähkövirtalähde, often translated as electrical power supply or simply power supply, is a fundamental component in electronics. Its primary function is to convert electrical energy from a source, such as a wall outlet or a battery, into a form suitable for powering a specific electronic device or circuit. This conversion often involves altering the voltage and/or current characteristics of the input power.

Power supplies can be broadly categorized into linear and switching types. Linear power supplies use components like transformers and regulators to reduce voltage and maintain stability, but they can be inefficient, especially when there is a large difference between input and output voltages. Switching power supplies, on the other hand, use high-frequency switching techniques to achieve higher efficiency, making them smaller and lighter for a given power output.

The output of a power supply can be direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC), though most electronic devices require DC power. Therefore, many power supplies include rectifiers to convert AC to DC and filters to smooth out any remaining ripple. Voltage regulators are also crucial for maintaining a constant output voltage despite variations in the input voltage or the load. Power supplies are essential for nearly all electronic devices, from small portable gadgets to large industrial machinery.
