Sähköpostijärjestelmä, often translated as email system, refers to the infrastructure and protocols that enable the sending, receiving, and storage of electronic messages. At its core, an email system consists of several key components: mail user agents (MUAs), mail transfer agents (MTAs), and mail delivery agents (MDAs).

The mail user agent, commonly known as an email client or webmail interface, is the software that users interact with to compose, read, send, and organize emails. Examples include Outlook, Gmail, and Thunderbird. The mail transfer agent is responsible for routing emails between servers. Protocols like SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) are used by MTAs to forward messages from the sender's server to the recipient's server.

Once an email reaches the recipient's server, the mail delivery agent takes over. MDAs, often using protocols like POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) or IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol), store incoming emails in the recipient's mailbox, allowing the user's MUA to access and retrieve them. The fundamental purpose of a sähköpostijärjestelmä is to facilitate asynchronous communication, meaning the sender and receiver do not need to be online simultaneously. This system has become an indispensable tool for personal and professional communication worldwide, underpinning much of modern digital interaction.
