A sähköovilukko, also known as an electric door lock, is a locking device operated by an electric current. Unlike traditional mechanical locks that rely solely on physical key mechanisms, electric door locks incorporate electrical components for their operation. This allows for remote control and integration with various access control systems.

There are several types of sähköovilukko. Solenoid locks use an electromagnet to hold a bolt in place. When power is applied, the electromagnet retracts the bolt, allowing the door to open. Electric strikes replace the traditional strike plate on a door frame. They have a movable part that is released by an electrical signal, enabling the door to be pushed or pulled open. Mortise locks can also be electrified, integrating an electric release mechanism into a standard mortise lock body. Magnetic locks, or maglocks, use a powerful electromagnet mounted on the door frame and a steel plate on the door itself. When energized, the magnet holds the door shut.

Electric door locks offer advantages such as enhanced security through integration with alarm systems, keyless entry options via keypads, RFID cards, or remote controls, and the ability to control access remotely. They are commonly found in commercial buildings, offices, and modern residential applications where convenience and advanced security features are desired. Power failure is a consideration, and most electric door locks are designed with fail-safe (unlocks when power is lost) or fail-secure (locks when power is lost) modes depending on the application's security requirements.
