Sähkökenttäantennit, often translated as electric field antennas or sometimes capacitive antennas, are a class of antennas that primarily interact with the electric component of an electromagnetic wave. Unlike conventional antennas that often rely on both electric and magnetic field interactions, sähkökenttäantennit are designed to be particularly sensitive to changes in the electric field. This sensitivity is often achieved through their physical construction, which typically involves conductive elements separated by an insulating material or arranged in a way that creates a significant capacitance.

The basic principle of operation involves the antenna's capacitance being modulated by the incident electric field. As the electric field of an electromagnetic wave oscillates, it causes charge to accumulate and dissipate on the conductive surfaces of the antenna, creating a fluctuating voltage. This fluctuating voltage can then be processed by associated circuitry to detect or transmit radio frequency signals. Due to their design, these antennas can be relatively small and can sometimes be integrated directly into other structures.
