Sähköhäviöt, or electrical losses, refer to the energy that is dissipated as heat or other forms of energy during the transmission, distribution, and use of electrical power. These losses are an inherent part of any electrical system and occur due to various physical phenomena.

One of the primary sources of sähköhäviöt is resistance in conductors. When electric current flows through wires, the material's resistance impedes the flow of electrons, converting some of the electrical energy into heat. This is known as Joule heating or resistive loss. The amount of heat generated is proportional to the square of the current and the resistance of the conductor.

Another significant factor contributing to sähköhäviöt is magnetic losses in transformers and other electromagnetic devices. These losses include hysteresis losses, which occur due to the repeated magnetization and demagnetization of the core material, and eddy current losses, which are circulating currents induced within the core by the changing magnetic field.

Furthermore, dielectric losses can occur in insulating materials, especially at high frequencies, where energy is absorbed by the dielectric material itself. Corona discharge, an electrical breakdown of air around high-voltage conductors, also contributes to energy losses.

Minimizing sähköhäviöt is crucial for improving the efficiency and economic viability of electrical power systems. Strategies employed to reduce these losses include using conductors with lower resistivity (e.g., copper or aluminum), optimizing conductor cross-sectional areas to reduce resistance, employing efficient transformer designs with low core losses, and maintaining high-voltage transmission to reduce current and hence resistive losses.
