Szürkehályogműtét, commonly referred to as cataract surgery, is a medical procedure to remove a clouded lens in the eye. This clouding, known as a cataract, impairs vision and can lead to progressive vision loss if left untreated. The surgery is one of the most frequently performed operations worldwide and is generally considered safe and effective.

The procedure typically involves replacing the clouded natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Before the surgery, a comprehensive eye examination is conducted to determine the appropriate IOL power and type. Various types of IOLs are available, including monofocal, multifocal, and toric lenses, each offering different visual correction possibilities.

During the surgery, a small incision is made in the cornea. The clouded lens is then broken into smaller pieces and removed, often using ultrasound technology (phacoemulsification). Once the natural lens is removed, the artificial IOL is inserted into its place. The incision is usually self-sealing, or it may require a few stitches.

The recovery period is typically short, with most patients experiencing improved vision within a few days. Post-operative care usually involves using eye drops to prevent infection and reduce inflammation. While complications are rare, potential risks include infection, swelling, retinal detachment, and a secondary cataract. Regular follow-up appointments with an ophthalmologist are essential to monitor healing and vision.
