In corpora and NLP pipelines, szótagszint is used as one tier of multi-layer annotation alongside lemma, part-of-speech, and morpheme segmentation. It supports tasks in phonology, prosody, speech synthesis and recognition, as well as language teaching and phonetic research. By providing a structured representation of how words are pronounced, szótagszint facilitates alignment between written forms and their phonetic realization.

Data at this level can be produced by rule-based syllabification tailored to Hungarian phonotactics, supplemented by lexicon-based exceptions. Representations may include explicit boundary markers or dedicated columns in annotation formats. Typical features include the syllable count of a word, indicators of tone or stress where available, and the segmentation of each syllable into onset, nucleus, and coda.
