Phonotactics is a branch of linguistics that studies the allowed arrangements of sounds in a language. It focuses on which phonemes can occur next to each other, where particular sequences can appear within syllables, and which combinations are considered illegal or unlikely. Phonotactic patterns are language-specific and help determine the acceptability of consonant clusters, vowel sequences, and other phoneme strings.

Key areas of study include syllable structure and permissible onsets, nuclei, and codas. Many languages allow consonant clusters in onsets (for example, multiple consonants at the beginning of a syllable), while others restrict them to single consonants. Codas also vary, with some languages permitting complex endings and others preferring simple ones. Vowel sequences, diphthongs, and vowel length can also be constrained by phonotactics. The Sonority Sequencing Principle, which relates the order of sounds to their relative loudness, is a widely cited heuristic for explaining why certain clusters are preferred or avoided.

Phonotactics interacts with other aspects of language, including loanword adaptation, phonological change, and morphophonemic alternations. When borrowing words, speakers often adjust sequences to fit their language’s phonotactic rules through processes like epenthesis (inserting a sound) or deletion. Variation across languages means that a sequence that is perfectly acceptable in one language may be disallowed in another.

In relation to broader phonology, phonotactics is often described as a set of constraints on possible sound sequences, sometimes captured in formal models to explain or predict natural language data. It differs from the abstract inventory of phonemes by specifying permissible combinations and positions within words.
