Szájvédelem, often translated as "mouthguard" or "oral protection," refers to devices or practices designed to protect the mouth, teeth, and surrounding tissues from injury. This can range from sports-related equipment to more general health and hygiene considerations.

In sports, mouthguards are crucial for preventing dental trauma. They are typically worn during contact sports like boxing, martial arts, hockey, football, and basketball. These custom-fitted or boil-and-bite devices absorb the impact of blows to the jaw or face, significantly reducing the risk of broken teeth, jaw fractures, and soft tissue injuries to the lips and cheeks. Different types of mouthguards exist, including stock, boil-and-bite, and custom-fitted ones, with custom-fitted models generally offering the best protection and comfort.

Beyond sports, szájvédelem can also encompass other forms of oral protection. This includes the use of dental appliances like night guards to protect teeth from grinding (bruxism) during sleep. Bruxism can wear down tooth enamel and cause jaw pain, and a night guard acts as a barrier. Additionally, the concept can extend to protecting against harmful oral habits or environmental factors, although this is less common terminology. Maintaining good oral hygiene, such as regular brushing and flossing, is also a fundamental aspect of protecting oral health, preventing decay and gum disease.
