This overgrowth of abnormal plasma cells can crowd out healthy blood cells, leading to a variety of complications.

While many people with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), a related condition, do not develop szpiczak, it is considered a precursor.

Some individuals may have no symptoms in the early stages.
