The process begins with an eye examination conducted by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. This examination determines the patient's refractive error, such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, or presbyopia. The results are then translated into a prescription detailing the necessary lens power, axis, and any additional features like prism or bifocal/progressive elements.

Once the prescription is obtained, the patient selects a frame. This choice is influenced by factors such as style, comfort, durability, and the type of lenses required. Certain lens types, like high-index lenses designed for strong prescriptions, may necessitate specific frame styles to optimize thickness and aesthetics.

The next critical step is lens fabrication. This can occur at an optical laboratory. Raw lens blanks, which are un-cut and un-shaped lenses, are ground and polished according to the precise specifications of the prescription. This is often done using sophisticated computer-controlled machinery (CNC) to ensure accuracy. The edges of the lenses are then beveled or grooved to fit securely into the chosen frame.

Finally, the lenses are mounted into the frame. This requires careful alignment to ensure the optical centers of the lenses are positioned correctly in front of the wearer's pupils for optimal vision and comfort. Adjustments are made to the frame to ensure a proper and comfortable fit on the wearer's face. The finished spectacles are then ready for the wearer.
