A szaglásfunkció, often translated as olfactory function, refers to the biological processes involved in the sense of smell. It encompasses the detection, identification, and interpretation of airborne chemical compounds, known as odorants. The process begins when odorant molecules enter the nasal cavity and dissolve in the mucus layer lining the olfactory epithelium. Here, specialized olfactory receptor neurons, each expressing a specific type of odorant receptor protein, bind to these molecules.

This binding event triggers a cascade of intracellular signals that ultimately generate an electrical impulse. These impulses are transmitted along the axons of the olfactory receptor neurons, which form the olfactory nerve, to the olfactory bulb, a structure in the forebrain. Within the olfactory bulb, the signals are further processed and then relayed to various brain regions, including the piriform cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. These areas are responsible for conscious perception of smell, emotional responses associated with odors, and the formation of olfactory memories.

Disruptions to szaglásfunkció can manifest as hyposmia (reduced ability to smell), anosmia (complete loss of smell), or parosmia (distorted sense of smell). These impairments can arise from various causes, including nasal and sinus diseases, viral infections (such as the common cold or COVID-19), head trauma, neurological disorders like Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease, and aging. Evaluating szaglásfunkció is important for diagnosing and managing these conditions, as a diminished sense of smell can impact quality of life, appetite, and safety (e.g., inability to detect gas leaks or spoiled food).
