Szabadmerülés, also known as freediving, is a discipline of underwater diving in which a diver stays underwater for an extended period without the use of breathing apparatus. The diver's breath is held voluntarily, and the dive is carried out using a single lungful of air. Freediving is an ancient practice with roots in activities such as pearl diving and sponge gathering. In modern times, it has evolved into a competitive sport and a recreational activity, emphasizing physical and mental control.

There are several disciplines within freediving, categorized by the technique used to descend and ascend. These include static apnea, where the diver remains motionless at the surface; dynamic apnea, where the diver swims horizontally underwater; and constant weight apnea, where the diver descends and ascends using their own propulsion without significant weight changes. Other disciplines involve specialized equipment or different descent/ascent methods.

Freediving requires significant training and preparation. It involves mastering breath-hold techniques, improving lung capacity, and developing mental focus to manage the physiological responses to holding one's breath. Safety is paramount in freediving, with divers always practicing with a buddy system to prevent incidents.
