The tactic was first significantly employed during World War I, but it was during the interwar period and World War II that dive bombing reached its zenith. Aircraft specifically designed for this role, known as dive bombers, possessed robust construction to withstand the stresses of the dive and often featured dive brakes to control their speed and angle. Famous examples include the Junkers Ju 87 Stuka, which became a symbol of German air power, and the Douglas SBD Dauntless, a crucial aircraft in the Pacific theater for the United States Navy.

The effectiveness of dive bombing lies in its precision. By approaching the target from a high altitude and diving steeply, the pilot can aim with great accuracy, increasing the likelihood of a direct hit. This made it particularly effective against heavily armored or stationary targets like ships, tanks, and fortifications. The psychological impact of a dive bombing attack, often accompanied by distinctive sirens or noise, was also considerable. Despite its success, the inherent risks associated with the maneuver led to its gradual decline in favor of more standoff weapons and guided munitions in modern warfare.
