Syringomyelia is a rare neurological disorder characterized by the development of a fluid-filled cyst, known as a syrinx, within the spinal cord. This syrinx can expand over time, damaging and dissecting nerve fibers. The exact cause of syringomyelia is often not fully understood, but it is frequently associated with conditions that obstruct the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Congenital abnormalities, such as Chiari malformations, where brain tissue extends into the spinal canal, are a common underlying factor.
