The term derives from Latin dis- “apart” and secare “to cut.” In biology and medicine, dissection is used to reveal anatomical features in animals, humans, and plants, as well as to understand tissue organization and developmental relationships.

Practitioners use instruments such as scalpels, scissors, forceps, and probes, often with pins and stabilizers, and may work with preserved or freshly collected specimens. In education, dissection provides direct hands-on experience that complements diagrams and models, helping learners identify organs, vessels, nerves, and tissue layers and appreciate spatial relationships. In botany, plant dissection examines tissue organization, leaf cross-sections, fruit and seed anatomy, and vascular systems.

Ethical and safety considerations are central to dissection. Institutions follow guidelines on humane treatment, biosafety, personal protective equipment, and proper disposal of biological waste. In many settings, especially in education, alternatives such as virtual dissection, plastinated specimens, or 3D models are used to reduce or replace animal use. Historically, dissection has played a critical role in the development of anatomy and medical science, shaping both teaching methods and medical knowledge.
