Syntymistäsinä is a Finnish term that translates to "birthmarks" in English. These are discolorations, spots, or blemishes that are present on the skin at or shortly after birth. They can vary greatly in appearance, size, shape, and color.

The causes of birthmarks are not always fully understood. Some are believed to be genetic, while others may result from the way blood vessels or pigment cells develop during fetal growth. They are generally categorized into two main types: vascular birthmarks and pigmented birthmarks.

Vascular birthmarks are caused by abnormalities in blood vessels. Examples include salmon patches (stork bites or angel kisses), which are typically flat, pink or red marks that fade over time, and hemangiomas, which are raised red or purple marks that can grow and sometimes regress. Port-wine stains are another type of vascular birthmark, appearing as flat, pink, red, or purple patches that are usually permanent.

Pigmented birthmarks are caused by an overgrowth or clustering of pigment cells (melanocytes). Common examples include moles (nevi), which can be brown, black, or flesh-colored and vary in appearance, and café-au-lait spots, which are flat, light brown patches. Mongolian spots, usually found on the lower back or buttocks of infants, are flat, bluish-gray marks.

Most birthmarks are benign and do not cause health problems. However, in some cases, particularly with larger or more extensive birthmarks, they can be associated with underlying medical conditions, and it is advisable to have them examined by a healthcare professional. Treatment is generally not necessary unless a birthmark is causing functional problems, is cosmetically concerning to the individual, or is linked to a medical issue.
