Symbioosia is a term used in speculative biology and some science fiction writers to denote a state of highly integrated symbiosis in which symbionts become essential to the host's survival and development. Unlike ordinary symbiosis, in symbioosia the lines between organismal identities blur as metabolic exchange, immune tolerance, and, in some accounts, genetic integration create a shared functional unit that cannot easily be separated.

Mechanisms proposed include efficient metabolite exchange, dependency on microbial products, host genetic regulation of symbiont populations, and sometimes horizontal gene transfer that embeds symbiont capabilities into host pathways. Over evolutionary time, this can produce co-evolved traits and even organelle-like integration.

Symbioosia is typically discussed in theoretical or fictional contexts rather than as a clinically defined condition. It is contrasted with classical mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism by the degree of interdependence and reversibility of the relationship.

Real-world parallels include established endosymbioses, such as mitochondria in eukaryotic cells and coral-dinoflagellate symbioses, as well as gut microbiota contributions to host physiology, though these are recognized as distinct, non-symbioosia phenomena.

Implications: if realized, symbioosia would challenge traditional concepts of individuality, inheritance, and medicine; it raises questions about reversibility, governance of the host-microbe unit, and the evolutionary trajectory of the host.
