It is generally described as a dense, glassy silicate with a distinctive optical glow and exceptional stability under heat and radiation. Because sylvit is not a real mineral, its properties vary across settings, serving as a flexible plot device.

In most renderings, sylvit's composition is a borosilicate-aluminate matrix with trace metallic inclusions. It is typically colorless or tinted pale blue to violet. Reported hardness ranges from 7 to 8 on the Mohs scale, with a refractive index near 1.75–1.80 and a high bulk density.
