Syphil is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It can affect both men and women and is typically spread through direct contact with a syphilis sore, also known as a chancre, during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Syphilis progresses in stages, and if left untreated, can cause serious long-term health problems.

The primary stage of syphilis is characterized by the appearance of a painless sore at the site of infection. This sore may go unnoticed, especially if it occurs internally. The secondary stage follows several weeks or months later and can include a rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue. These symptoms may disappear on their own, but the infection remains active.

The latent stage is asymptomatic, meaning there are no visible signs or symptoms of the infection. This stage can last for years. The tertiary stage, which can occur decades after the initial infection, can lead to severe damage to internal organs, including the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, blood vessels, liver, bones, and joints.

Syphilis is curable with antibiotics, most commonly penicillin. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent complications. Syphilis can also be transmitted from a pregnant person to their baby, leading to congenital syphilis, which can cause serious health issues for the infant. Regular testing is recommended for individuals at higher risk.
