Sydämentahdistin, known in English as a pacemaker, is a small medical device used to treat heart rhythm problems. When the heart beats too slowly, too fast, or irregularly, a pacemaker can help maintain a normal heart rhythm. The device consists of a pulse generator, which contains a battery and a small computer, and one or more leads, which are wires that connect the pulse generator to the heart.

The pulse generator monitors the heart's electrical activity and sends impulses to the heart muscle when needed. These impulses cause the heart to contract, ensuring it pumps blood effectively throughout the body. Pacemakers are implanted surgically, usually under local anesthesia, with the pulse generator typically placed in the chest wall, just below the collarbone. The leads are then threaded through a vein into one or more chambers of the heart.

There are different types of pacemakers, including single-chamber, dual-chamber, and biventricular pacemakers, each designed to address specific cardiac conditions. The choice of pacemaker depends on the patient's individual needs and the nature of their heart rhythm disorder. Regular follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor the pacemaker's function and battery life. Modern pacemakers are highly sophisticated and can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals with bradycardia (slow heart rate) and other heart rhythm disturbances.
