Swamping is a term used in several fields to describe a process involving flooding or saturation, most commonly in ecology and electronics.

In ecology and land management, swamping refers to the transformation of land into a swamp or wetland through persistent waterlogging. Natural swamping occurs when hydrological conditions—such as high water tables, frequent flooding, or poor drainage—create waterlogged soils and promote the establishment of hydrophytic plants. Human activities, including damming, drainage, and land reclamation, can also trigger swamping, sometimes altering ecosystem structure, hydrology, and carbon cycling. Impacts can include changes in biodiversity, soil chemistry, and methane emissions, as well as shifts in watershed function and land use.

In electronics and engineering, swamping is a design technique used to stabilize a circuit’s response by introducing a dominant impedance, making output behavior less sensitive to variations in device parameters or temperature. A common variant is current swamping, where a large resistor is added in series with a sensing element to convert current changes into a more stable voltage signal. Swamping helps improve linearity, reduce drift, and widen operational bounds in amplifiers, sensors, and analog front ends.

In everyday language, swamping can also mean overwhelming someone with a large quantity of items or information, though this usage is informal.
