It is a crucial aspect of overall health and well-being, particularly for vulnerable populations. Impaired swallowing, known as dysphagia, can lead to serious health issues such as malnutrition, dehydration, pneumonia, and a reduced quality of life.

Several factors can affect sväljningssäkerheten. These include age-related changes in the swallowing mechanism, neurological conditions like stroke, Parkinson's disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), head and neck cancers and their treatments, and certain medications. This assessment may include observing the patient's ability to manage different food textures and liquid consistencies, as well as instrumental evaluations such as a videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) or a fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES).

Interventions to improve sväljningssäkerheten are tailored to the individual's specific needs. These can include dietary modifications, such as thickening liquids or changing food textures, swallowing exercises and maneuvers to strengthen swallowing muscles and improve coordination, and compensatory strategies to make swallowing safer. In some cases, alternative feeding methods like a feeding tube may be necessary. Maintaining good oral hygiene is also an important component of swallowing safety, as it reduces the risk of infection.
