A support film is a thin, flexible substrate that provides mechanical support for coatings, emulsions, or samples in various manufacturing and analysis processes. It is designed to be compatible with the materials applied on or onto it, and may be transparent or opaque, chemically resistant, and heat-stable depending on use.

Materials commonly used include polymeric films such as polyester (PET), polycarbonate, polyimide, and cellulose derivatives; sometimes metal foils or other glassy substrates are used for specialized needs. In microscopy, carbon or formvar films on grids serve as supports; in photography and cinema, acetate or polyester bases carry photographic emulsions; in electronics and displays, PET and polyimide films act as flexible substrates.

Applications include imaging and printing, where the support carries the emulsion or ink; laminates and packaging, where it provides a temporary base during coating or bonding; microelectronics and flexible devices, where it serves as a substrate for device layers; and microscopy, where it holds specimens for electron or light microscopy.

Manufacturing and properties: Films are produced by casting or extrusion, followed by winding or coating. They range in thickness from a few micrometers to tens of micrometers, with surface treatments to control adhesion, friction, or coating compatibility. Durability and chemical resistance are tailored to the application, and recyclability or disposal varies by material.
