Suojaalueiden is a Finnish term used to refer to areas designated to protect natural values, biodiversity, landscapes, or cultural heritage. The concept encompasses a wide range of protected sites, from national parks and nature reserves to other protected areas established under Finnish nature conservation legislation and international obligations. The majority of protected areas in Finland are administered by Metsähallitus, with planning and monitoring supported by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) and regional authorities.

Protected areas are classified according to their conservation objectives and the level of acceptable human activity. Some protect biodiversity and ecological integrity through strict restrictions on land use, while others allow regulated recreation, research, and traditional uses. The overarching aim is to conserve representative ecosystems, safeguard endangered species and habitats, maintain ecosystem services, and preserve cultural landscapes and values.

In addition to national protections, Finland participates in the Natura 2000 network under European Union directives, and many sites are designated to meet these obligations. Management and visitor access are guided by national legislation on nature protection, as well as site-specific management plans and rules posted at each location. Visitors are typically subject to restrictions on motorized transport, camping, collection of plants or minerals, and disturbance of wildlife.

Challenges facing protected areas include climate change, invasive species, and pressures from tourism. Ongoing monitoring, adaptive management, and stakeholder engagement are central to maintaining the integrity of suojelualueiden while allowing sustainable use and enjoyment of Finland’s natural and cultural heritage.
