Sulfonoitumismenetelmä, often translated as sulfonation method, refers to a chemical process used to introduce a sulfonic acid group (-SO3H) into an organic molecule. This functionalization is a crucial step in the synthesis of many important compounds, including dyes, pharmaceuticals, detergents, and ion-exchange resins.

The most common method for sulfonation is the direct reaction of an organic substrate with a sulfonating agent. Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is a widely used reagent, often in concentrated or fuming forms (oleum, which is sulfuric acid containing dissolved sulfur trioxide, SO3). Sulfur trioxide itself is also a potent sulfonating agent. The reaction typically proceeds via an electrophilic aromatic substitution mechanism when applied to aromatic compounds. The sulfur trioxide acts as the electrophile, attacking the electron-rich aromatic ring.

The conditions under which sulfonation is carried out, such as temperature, concentration of the sulfonating agent, and reaction time, are critical for controlling the extent and regioselectivity of the reaction. For instance, aromatic sulfonation is often reversible, and under certain conditions, the sulfonic acid group can be removed. This reversibility can be exploited in certain synthetic strategies.

Other less common methods for sulfonation exist, including the use of chlorosulfonic acid (ClSO3H) or sulfuryl chloride (SO2Cl2) in conjunction with a Lewis acid catalyst. These methods may offer advantages in specific applications, such as the sulfonation of less reactive substrates or when precise control over the reaction is required. The choice of method depends on the substrate's reactivity, desired product, and economic considerations.
