Sukkessio, the Finnish term for ecological succession, describes the gradual change in the species composition and structure of an ecological community over time in response to disturbance or environmental change. It is a directional process that can alter the physical environment, nutrient cycling, and habitat conditions, creating new communities and ecosystem functions.

Successional pathways are typically divided into primary and secondary successional processes. Primary succession occurs on newly formed or barren substrates where no soil exists, such as newly exposed rock after glaciation or volcanic activity.
