Sukkessio

Sukkessio, the Finnish term for ecological succession, describes the gradual change in the species composition and structure of an ecological community over time in response to disturbance or environmental change. It is a directional process that can alter the physical environment, nutrient cycling, and habitat conditions, creating new communities and ecosystem functions.

Successional pathways are typically divided into primary and secondary successional processes. Primary succession occurs on newly formed or barren substrates where no soil exists, such as newly exposed rock after glaciation or volcanic activity. Secondary succession follows disturbances that leave soil intact, such as wildfires, clear-cutting, or agricultural abandonment. In both pathways, early stages are often dominated by opportunistic, fast-growing organisms known as pioneers, such as lichens, mosses, and grasses. Over time, these early communities modify the environment, promoting the establishment of shrubs, then trees, and eventually a more complex, often slower-developing community.

Key concepts in sukkessio include seral stages, late-successional or climax communities, and the interplay between biotic interactions and abiotic factors. Autogenic changes arise from the living community itself, while allogenic changes result from external environmental forces such as climate, soil development, or disturbance regimes. Researchers study succession using methods like chronosequences, comparing sites of different ages to infer temporal trajectories.

Sukkessio informs biodiversity conservation, habitat restoration, and land-management practices by highlighting how ecosystems recover after disturbances and how managers can steer recovery toward desired conditions. Debates persist about the existence of a fixed climax and the predictability of successional pathways, emphasizing the flexible nature of ecological development.
