Suffixclitics are a type of clitic that occur at the end of a host word. Like all clitics, they are phonologically dependent yet syntactically independent, lacking full morphological autonomy. They attach obligatorily to a preceding host, whose phonological structure is altered by the clitic: prefixal clitics typically precede the host phonologically, while suffixclitics attach immediately after it. Because of their position, suffixclitics can exhibit phonological assimilation or deletion rules that are not applied to non-clitic suffixes.

A defining property of suffixclitics is that they are realized as a bound element at the right edge of the host, and they often carry grammatical or pragmatic functions such as tense, aspect, mood, evidentiality or discourse marking. In languages like Japanese, the polite form‑suffix ‑masu functions as a suffixclitic, while in languages such as Welsh, the case enclitic ‑all is also a suffixclitic. Some linguists treat suffixclitics as a subset of clitic morphology because they carry less morphological weight than full suffixes; this distinction is sometimes blurred in typological surveys.

Theoretical accounts vary. Some frameworks treat suffixclitics as part of a clitic chain that interacts with the host’s prosody. Others argue that suffixclitics are a separate class entirely because they do not behave like ordinary suffixes in structural relations. Empirical research across more than a dozen languages shows that suffixclitics are sensitive to prosodic boundaries, often being attached to the head of a phrase rather than to any particular lexical word. Studying suffixclitics helps linguists understand the fine‑grained interface between morphology, syntax, and phonology.
