Subtipuri is a term used in several disciplines to describe more specific categories that belong to a broader class. In Romanian, subtipuri translates to subtypes and denotes variants that share an underlying type but differ in particular features or properties. The concept is rooted in the idea of taxonomy and hierarchical classification: a subtype is a refinement of a supertype.

In biology and medicine, subtypes are used to distinguish variants of organisms, diseases, or tumors that require different considerations for diagnosis, prognosis, or treatment. Examples include cancer subtypes defined by molecular profiles, microbial strains distinguished by genetic markers, or clinical subtypes of autoimmune diseases. A robust subtype definition often relies on measurable characteristics such as genetics, morphology, or biomarker expressions.

In linguistics and social sciences, subtypes organize phenomena into more precise groups within a larger category, such as dialect subtypes, language families, or syntactic constructions. In computer science and data modeling, subtyping describes a relationship where a subtype can be used wherever its supertype is expected. This enables polymorphism and code reuse, and it supports the explicit capture of specialized behavior while preserving a common interface. In database design, subtype–supertype hierarchies underlie inheritance-like structures used to model shared and distinct attributes.

Because subtypes are context-dependent, their criteria and boundaries can vary across domains. Definitional clarity and consistent measurement are essential for meaningful subtype classification.
