Substituutofficier is a historical term used in Dutch-speaking military contexts to designate a person appointed to substitute for an officer who is absent or unavailable. It is not a formal rank; rather, an appointment or function granted for a limited period to maintain leadership and operational continuity.

Typically, a substituutofficier was drawn from experienced non-commissioned officers or junior officers and entrusted with command responsibilities appropriate to the unit size. His duties could include leading a detachment, issuing orders, maintaining discipline, and handling administrative tasks, all under the supervision of a commissioned officer. The authority of the substituutofficier varied by era and theater, but in general it was less than that of a fully commissioned officer and the position did not confer the full rights and pay of an officer.

Historically the role appeared in the Dutch armed forces during the early modern period, notably in campaigns and garrison duties in the 17th through 19th centuries, when rapid changes in personnel necessitated temporary leadership. Over time, the practice declined as more formal arrangements for temporary command—such as waarnemend officier or acting officer—became standard in modern armed forces. In current Dutch military usage, the term is largely obsolete, with more common equivalents describing the function rather than a distinct appointment.
