Substanttiivista is a Finnish term used to describe substantivist approaches in the social sciences. In English-language scholarship the corresponding concept is substantivism, the view that economic life is embedded in social institutions and cultural norms rather than governed by abstract market logic. The term is commonly encountered in discussions of how societies organize production, exchange, and resource distribution beyond purely formal economic models.

Historically, substantivist thought is associated with Karl Polanyi and, in related strands, Marcel Mauss’s analyses of gift exchange and reciprocity. Substantivists argue that economic activities are inseparable from social relations, kinship, authority, and ritual obligations. They emphasize the embeddedness of economic actions within institutions such as family structures, religiou­s norms, and political systems.
