Subsetting is the operation of selecting a subset from a larger set, list, array, or dataset according to specified criteria. The result is a smaller collection that preserves the context of the original while containing only elements that meet the conditions. Subsetting is a common tool in data analysis, programming, statistics, and mathematics.

In mathematics, a subset is any set whose elements are drawn from another set; the relation is denoted by the subset symbol ⊆ and, when proper, ⊂. Subsetting a set refers to producing another set that contains only some of its elements. For example, {1,2} is a subset of {1,2,3}.

In computing and data processing, subsetting is performed by selecting elements by position (indices), by value (boolean conditions), or by a combination of both. Common techniques include boolean masks, range or slice notation, and selecting by labels or keys. Subsetting allows focusing analysis, reducing memory usage, or preparing data for algorithms.
