submandibulaarikanal

Submandibulaarikanal, usually referred to in English as the submandibular duct or ductus submandibularis (Wharton’s duct), is the main channel by which saliva produced by the submandibular gland is delivered into the oral cavity. It originates from the anterior part of the submandibular gland and travels forward along the floor of the mouth. The duct generally runs medially to the mandible and proceeds toward the tongue, where it opens at the sublingual caruncle, near the base of the lingual frenulum.

The duct is a mucous-lined channel that carries saliva from the submandibular gland, which produces a mixed serous and mucous secretion rich in enzymes such as amylase. Saliva from the submandibular gland contributes to lubrication, digestion, and protection of the oral mucosa. The duct’s opening at the sublingual caruncle allows saliva to be released into the mouth during feeding and swallowing.

Clinically, the submandibular duct is notable for potential obstruction by salivary stones (sialolithiasis), which can cause swelling and pain, particularly during meals. Inflammation of the gland or duct (sialadenitis) and ductal injuries are others considerations in practice. Management may involve conservative measures, sialendoscopy to remove stones, duct dilation, or surgical procedures that address the submandibular gland or its duct. The duct is often discussed together with the submandibular gland, and the term Wharton’s duct is a common eponym.
