størsteparten

Størsteparten is a Norwegian political term referring to the party with the largest number of seats in a legislature, most commonly in the Storting, the Norwegian Parliament. The term is descriptive and neutral and is not an official title. It denotes relative size and potential influence rather than a formal position.

In the Norwegian system, governments are formed by parties that can command majority support in the Storting. The størsteparten may attempt to form the government, but it does not automatically gain executive power. If the størsteparten cannot secure majority support, another arrangement—such as a coalition led by a different party or a mindretallsregjering (minority government) supported by several parties—may prevail. The size of the largest party gives it leverage in negotiations and in setting the legislative agenda, though actual power depends on parliamentary support.

The term is used in political analysis and media to discuss election results and coalition possibilities. It is applicable in other multiparty, proportional-representation systems as well, where the largest party in parliament often plays a leading role in governance discussions but may still need coalition partners to secure a majority.

Connections to government formation: The largest party often leads or influences negotiations; however, being størsteparten does not guarantee chairing the cabinet or a majority, and there can be cases where a smaller coalition attains governing power.
