Styczniki, or electromagnetic contactors, are electrical switching devices designed to connect or disconnect circuits carrying relatively high current, notably in motor control and automation. They are distinguished from smaller signaling relays by their higher current ratings and robust mechanical construction.

They consist of a coil (electromagnet), an armature, fixed and movable contacts, and often auxiliary contacts. When the coil is energized, the magnetic field pulls the armature, closing the main contacts; when de-energized, a spring returns the armature and opens the circuit. Styczniki typically include normally open and normally closed contacts and may offer auxiliary contacts for signaling or control circuits. Arc suppression features are commonly implemented to extend life.

Typical types include three-phase contactors for AC loads, as well as single-phase variants, sometimes combined with overload relays for motor protection. Coil voltage varies and can be 24 V DC, 230 V AC, among others. The rated current and voltage, contact configuration (NO/NC), and the number of auxiliary contacts determine the suitable model for a given installation.

Applications encompass starting and stopping motors, switching lighting and other high-current loads, and serving as main switching devices in control panels and automation systems. They are often used in conjunction with overload relays and soft starters to protect motors and ensure safe operation.

Standards and safety considerations include compliance with IEC 60947-4-1 and 60947-5-1 for AC contactors and auxiliary contactors, appropriate derating for temperature and duty cycle, and proper coordination with protection devices. Regular maintenance involves checking contact wear, inspecting for overheating, and testing coil resistance to ensure reliable operation.
